Tools for Change: An Educator's Resource Site

About This Site

Tools for Change is a comprehensive online “toolkit” of resources for educators. Educational resources have been examined for their ability to create learning opportunities for students to gain knowledge, experiences, skills, and strategies to develop healthy relationships and social environments based upon values of mutual respect and empowerment, as well as equity and social justice.

A ‘strengths based’ review assesses how and to what extent each resource meets a series of criteria. The theoretical foundation for the criteria lies in Cultural Relational Theory and Intersectional Theory (see our Powerpoint Presentation).

Criteria have been organized into categories of knowledge-based and experiential learning, which together raise the awareness of students with respect to healthy and equal relationships, build foundations for new understandings, and foster capacities for change.

Sets of questions have been developed to assess qualitatively how resources enable children and youth to acquire a) knowledge and b) experiences and skills promoting healthy and equal relationships by:

  1. Exploring Healthy Relationships;
  2. Exploring Relations of Oppression/Marginalization and Equality;
  3. Exploring Identity, Gender & Diversity; and
  4. Developing Connections, Creative Thinking & Participation

In addition, each resource has a pedagogical assessment.

The review criteria have been abbreviated in each assessment. To see the full set of questions that was asked about each resource click on the appropriate link below (all download Microsoft Word documents).
