Strengths Summary:

This resource provides a holistic framework for preventing violence by empowering children. The framework consists of topics such as healthy relationships, communication, self esteem, prevention of stereotyping, personal safety, and family violence, and how these interact to contribute towards the common goal of preventing violence by empowering youth.

The resource outlines a school-based process for the planning of a violence prevention program. The focus is on the uniqueness of each school, and a framework is provided in order to tailor a violence prevention program to each school’s individual needs.

The resource makes connections to the curriculum, showing how promoting healthy relationships can be incorporated into each subject (e.g. math/science, art, and language, and more). Suggestions of print and video resources are given to aid educators in the process of developing a school-based violence prevention program.

The resource also outlines strategies to engage families in students’ education.
